I needed a challenge. I found a backpack pattern at A Quaint Stitch called the Wayfarer 2.0, and thought this would allow me to develop some new sewing muscles. I also decided, perhaps foolishly, that I should use some more difficult fabrics for this project since I get the most positive feedback on bags that are done in something other than quilt cotton or canvas. So I picked a light faux leather and a pebble textured faux leather from Sallie Tomato in navy blue. I’ve used faux leather from that site previously (see the square backpack here), and always get the most comments on the bags using these quality materials. However, using these materials made my task even more difficult as there were some places where the many layers of fabric that had to be sewn together were almost too much for my machine to handle. I switched to a denim needle and went slow, and was able to get it done. I’m quite proud of how this bag turned out and I can’t wait to use it.
I first made the handle using the pebble leather, but that was way too thick, so I had to switch over to the light leather instead. I used grommets instead of D-rings on the handle attachments, and used a swivel hook and grommet for the front flap attachment. I love my rivet press and like to try and use it as much as I can.
The bag has two main pockets. The first one has a foam-padded divider to keep gadgets safe plus a zipper pocket. The flap pocket had an optional pen pocket that I left out. There’s a zippered pocket on the front as well, and a hidden zipper pocket on the back of the bag so I can retrieve small items without taking the bag off.
The pattern has two options for the strap; I opted for the sling strap instead of the zippered convertible backpack strap.
This is a great pattern for intermediate or advanced bag makers. It gives lots of options for customizing the bag including a second gusset with another compartment. It shows you how to finish it using the birthing method (my choice) as well as binding. Everything fit together well. I would definitely be willing to make it again, but maybe using waxed canvas instead of the faux leather.
