Carry On Bag

Michelle is planning an international trip, and may need a carry-on for her travels, so I found this pattern from Sallie Tomato called Casey. I made the bag as a prototype (naturally), and based on lessons learned may make a second for Michelle.

This bag is the perfect size for fitting on top of a wheeled suitcase as well as under the airplane seat. I love the side feature with a fold down tab that hooks to the bottom, allowing the bag to have a square profile. The pattern shows two exterior slip pockets, but I modified one to be a strap instead so it will fit over a suitcase handle. There are two slip pockets inside, one on each side. The top zipper has a double slide for easy access.

I used black vinyl for the contrast, which includes the bag bottom, handles, strap, zipper edges, and side tabs. I found the vinyl to be difficult to work with and probably won’t rush to use that material again, although the finished product does look nice. I also decided against using foam stabilizer as I find that hard to work with, so I substituted a heavy Decor-Bond instead. The bag would probably stand up better with foam, but I don’t mind how the Decor-Bond worked out. Although if I had to make another one I might try a different stabilizer.
