Ukulele Case

The ukulele case is based on the Crockett pattern by Sallie Tomato. In order to fit my soprano ukulele, I added 3” to the length. This affected the front and back pieces (main, lining, and foam) as well as the side gusset and zipper gusset. All other measurements remained the same. I eliminated the interior patch pocket.

Materials: I used a frost patterned denim as the outer fabric, blue cork for the accent, and a silver blue quilting cotton for the lining. I used woven SF101 interfacing as directed in the pattern. The strap is 1” cotton webbing. The hardware is from Sallie Tomato in gunmetal color.

Lessons Learned

  • Even with the extra 3” length, it’s a tight squeeze to get the instrument into the case. Next time, I will add ½” to the zipper gusset and take away ½” from the top gusset to allow just a bit more maneuvering room through the zipper opening.
  • I accidentally installed the inner zipper pocket on the front panel of the lining, so that it opens along the back instead of next to the zipper, so the pocket is basically useless. For an instrument case, I also don’t really want a hard zipper next to the instrument so next time I will add a Velcro closure instead of a zipper and of course install it on the right side. Maybe use a slip pocket instead of the zipper pocket.
  • The exterior pocket is very stylish but a bit too open. I think it needs a Velcro closure right under the flap to make it more secure.
  • I had a hard time with the rounded corners of the gusset. I don’t think the rounding is terribly important, so next time I will try the simpler square corner gusset.
  • I also had a hard time with the way the lining is installed. I think using a drop in lining would be simpler, and if I can sew it into place along the back seam, it will be secure enough. This will require possibly hand stitching along the zipper on the lining side, similar to the Sandhill Sling pattern.
