Denim Tote with Gusset

I created this tote as a sample of creating a square gusset. When I made the Sandhill Sling, which has a rounded corner gusset, I did not find the rounded corners easy to set into the gusset and ended up with some tucks in the seams. I found a method for the square corners that seemed much simpler than trying to ease in the rounded corners.

Features: There is an exterior pocket of polka dot denim. The straps are connected to the bag with gunmetal colored rectangle rings which are set into the top seam. A recessed zipper top closure has polka dot denim facings. There’s an interior zippered pocket. The lining is an olive green background with cows print.

Lessons Learned:

  • Square corner gussets are easy!
  • The interior zipper pocket is too close to the recessed zipper, making it difficult to use, especially since I topstitched the zipper panel along the top, causing it to lay down in the bag when unzipped. Next time, I will topstitch along the bottom of the zipper panel so it will lay up in the bag.
