The Oxbow bag pattern from Noodlehead seemed the perfect size for a weekend get away. I had a bunch of pink corduroy left over from the backpack project, and I knew Karla would love it, so I used this pattern to make her a prototype. The bag is large, about 18″ wide, 6.5″ deep, and 14″ tall. It has one exterior slip pocket, a zipper top closure, and a divided interior slip pocket. I wanted to experiment with interfacings on the prototype version, so I used SF101 on both the corduroy and lining, then a layer of canvas from Joann Fabrics to add structure to the exterior. I thought this would be important given the size of the bag. I think the bag has a nice heft and should be strong enough to carry a weekend’s worth of clothes and toiletries.
After the prototype, I wanted to make one less girly for Charlie to use when he travels between houses. I found a nice burgundy waxed canvas and had some navy blue left over from another project, so I used that as the accent color on the base and side pocket. I continued to experiment with interfacings on this version. I used a layer of canvas to strengthen the exterior, and used a nice hefty canvas for the lining with no interfacing.
I didn’t make any changes to the pattern or how I put it together as I enjoyed the way it all worked out in the prototype. I remembered to put my cork Too Many Totes bag tags on both these versions!
I also made one in the smaller size, using the same burgundy waxed canvas but accented with a printed cork for the pocket and base. Matching luggage set!
